The technical toolkit for bias measurement includes demographic parity (equal selection rates across groups), equalized odds (equal true/false positive rates), and counterfactual fairness (would the outcome change if the protected attribute were different?). No single metric captures all aspects of fairness — the appropriate metric depends on the use case and the ethical framework applied to it.

Building Responsible AI Infrastructure

Organizations deploying AI at scale need infrastructure that supports the full responsible AI lifecycle: data governance (lineage, quality assessment, consent management), model development standards (reproducibility, bias testing, security assessment), deployment controls (staged rollout, monitoring, circuit breakers), and continuous monitoring (drift detection, fairness metric tracking, incident response).

Model cards — standardized documentation that describes what a model does, how it was trained, its intended and out-of-scope uses, its performance characteristics across demographic groups, and its known limitations — are emerging as the standard transparency artifact.
